This requirement only applies to fixed installations in homes in Wales and England that will be operating at either low level or extra-low voltage.

The Competent Persons Scheme covers the following areas of electrical qualifications which are included in the Building Regulations:

• Electrical

• Plumbing

• Ventilation

• Heating

• Energy Efficiency

Once a contractor is registered with the Scheme, they will be able to certify to NICEIC that the work they have performed complies with the applicable Building Regulations without the Local Authority Building Control needing to come out to perform an inspection. The contractor will be able to certify their work using an online facility.

To register for a Competent Persons Scheme, the contractor will need to submit an application form, including details of the contractor's installation work. An NICEIC engineer will visit the contractor to review two work samples. An on-site assessment will be conducted before the business can be registered under this Scheme.
