Domestic electrical installations have been included within the scope of the Building Regulations since January 2005. Any new domestic electrical installations, together with certain alterations or additions to existing installations, now have to be inspected to comply with strict electrical safety performance standards. The standards encompass the design, installation, inspection and testing of domestic electrical work and the provision of information.
The Domestic Installer qualification is a Vocationally Related Qualification (VRQ) offered by EMTA Awards Limited (EAL).
Many allied trades such as kitchen fitters, plumbers, gas fitters, fire
and security engineers are indirectly linked to the electrical industry and it is these trades that the domestic installer qualification is aimed at, although the scheme has been used by many trainees as a quick route into the electrical industry.
The NICEIC have a similar qualification known as the Domestic Installer Scheme Qualification (DISQ) which has different levels available according to the type of work that will be carried out by the electrician.
The DISQ qualification enables registration to the competent person scheme in accordance with Part P of the Building Regulations.
