Why become a Domestic Installer?

As a Domestic Installer, skilled workers are qualified to undertake electrical installation working in domestic houses and flats. It is not a complete electrical qualification; it doesn’t allow you to work for instance in industrial or commercial premises, but it is a straightforward way of getting a qualification which will enable you to earn and practice as an electrician, or at the least do electrical work.

Domestic Installer, what does it mean?

Domestic installations have been included within the scope of the Building Regulations since January 2005, known as Part P. Any new electrical installations, together with certain alterations  to existing installations within a domestic situation, have to be inspected to comply with strict electrical safety performance standards. Many allied trades such as kitchen fitters, plumbers, gas fitters, fire and security engineers are indirectly linked to the electrical industry and it is these trades that the domestic installer qualification is aimed at, although the scheme has been used by many trainees as a quick route into the electrical industry.

Who provides the qualification?

The Domestic Installer qualification is a Vocationally Related Qualification (VRQ) offered by EAL

NICEIC have a similar qualification known as the Domestic Installer Scheme Qualification (DISQ) which has different levels available according to the type of work that will be carried out by the electrician. The DISQ qualification enables registration to the competent person scheme in accordance with Part P of the Building Regulations.

City and Guilds have introduced a qualification that is relevant to the domestic installer. The 2393 Level 3 Certificate in the Building Regulations for Electrical Installations in Dwellings. The qualification is designed to meet the needs of candidates who work or intend to work in the Building Service Engineering sector such as electricians and who need to be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge of the Building Regulations for electrical installations in dwellings in England and Wales.

Important Information

There has been a move to discontinue the Domestic Installer Scheme. But for the moment, the scheme is still in process, however EAL are accepting new candidates only up to March 2014.

Following a recent Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) Select Committee meeting, electrical industry members are working on a proposal for a mark underpinned by a single register for all full-scope Part P registered electricians.
