Level 2 Certificate in Fundamental Inspection, Testing and Initial Verification
Now in the process of being replaced by 2394 - Fundamental inspection and testing
The City and Guilds 2392 Level 2 Certificate in Fundamental Inspection, Testing and Initial Verification is a relatively recent electrical qualification with the original aim of helping candidates with less experience gain relevant training and experience, before tackling the more difficult and in depth City and Guilds 2391 qualification.
Please note that the 2391 is also now changed to the 2394 and 2395 qualifications.
It was expected that students who first pass the 2392 will have greater success at passing the original 2391 at a later date as many candidates were failing due to a lack of testing experience, which made this in depth qualification extremely difficult.
With the 2391 exam generally having a greater number of students failing than passing, it was seen as a necessary step to introduce a ‘stepping stone’ qualification in the form of the City and Guilds 2392.
The 2392 has no pre-qualification requirements, but there is a small practical element to the exam. The 2392 exam is in two parts, with one part taken online on the e-volve interface and is in the form of 50 multiple choice questions which must be answered in 100 minutes. This is a ‘closed book’ exam, meaning you cannot take any reference material in with you. This is the 2392-101, with the 2392-102 being the practical application of the initial verification practical assessment.
If you are entering the electrical industry for the first time, or perhaps from an allied trade such as plumbing, kitchen fitting etc., then you may find the 2392 course a suitable start in the field of inspection and testing, before progressing to further qualifications. The 2392 is not really a qualification in it’s own right, but goes some way to illustrating competence and will certainly set you up for more recognised electrical qualifications which you may require further down the line.
The qualification is based upon the IET 17th Edition Wiring Regulations rather than occupational standards or NVQ / SVQ, so candidates wishing to obtain this qualification may be best obtaining their 2382-15 qualification first.
Achieving a good pass mark in the 2392 exam would stand you in very good stead for the 2391 exam or the new 2394 and 2395, which should be the goal for anyone wishing to become involved in inspection and testing or indeed anyone wishing to gain a very relevant and advantageous electrical qualification for today’s electrician.
