Level 4 Award in the Design and Verification of Electrical Installations
The City and Guilds 2396 is a new qualification that addresses the qualification requirements for personnel who may be working in electrical contracting companies and have responsibility for the quality of the design, specification and installation and testing process. This qualification particularily considers the implications of the wiring regulations for electrical installations.
The 2396 qualification is perhaps the most up to date and advanced electrical design course that is presently available and is aimed at experienced personnel working within the electrical industry.
Before considering this qualification, it would be beneficial to already hold the 2394 and 2395 or 2391 qualifications. As always, also obtaining the 17th Edition 2382-15 qualification before the 2395 would be of benefit.
To obtain the 2396 qualification, candidates need to successfully achieve 10 credits from the mandatory units. These credits can be achieved by passing the following units:
Design, construction management and initial verification of electrical installations
Passing both these units will provide the necessary 10 credits.
Although this is an advanced, Level 4 qualification, City & Guilds does not set entry requirements for the 2396.However, candidates must have the potential and opportunity to gain the qualification successfully and as stated above, before considering this qualification, candidates should seriously consider obtaining the Level 3 Award in Initial Verification and Certification of Electrical Installations (2394) and/or Level 3 Award in the Periodic Inspection, Testing and Certification of Electrical Installations (2395) as well as obtaining industry experience.
It is also strongly recommended that candidates have achieved either the City & Guilds Certificate in the Requirements for Electrical Installations (BS7671) (2382) or similar qualifications where candidates have demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the 17th edition in order to ensure they have every opportunity of achieving this qualification.
Unit 401 has a guided learning of 40 hours consisting of the following:
with the 402 consisting of a written test on the following:
Understand the electrical installation design, construction and commissioning process (2 question 20%)
Understand BS 7671 requirements relating to electrical installation design (8 question 80%)
The 402 is an 'open book' written test, which means you are allowed to take into the exam with you and refer to the following:
• BS 7671 Wiring Regulations
• On-site Guide
• Guidance Notes 1 and 3
