Achievement Measurement 2

The Achievement Measurement 2, or AM2, is a Practical Performance Assessment that is administered by the National Electrotechnical Training (NET). Apprentices sign up for the AM2 to complete the requirements for their electrical qualifications.

The AM2 is a practical assessment with a short online component, taken over 16.5 hours in total.  During this time candidates undertake a series of timed tasks in specially equipped booths containing typical electrical installation wiring systems. The exercises include installation, inspection and testing and fault-finding and the work must comply with the current IEE Wiring Regulations and be carried out in line with Health & Safety best practice.

AM2 is the Assessment of Occupational Competence for candidates in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. (Scottish candidates see FICA)

AM2 Assessment sections

The AM2 competence assessment comprises four sections A – D. (Section A is split into two distinct areas which are separately marked):

A1 Safe Isolation and Risk Assessment (1 hour)

A  Composite Installation (8.5 hours)

B  Inspection and Testing (3.5 hours)

C  Fault Diagnosis (2.5 hours)

D  Assessment of Applied Knowledge (1 hour)

How to Pass the AM2

You want to take all the steps necessary to prepare yourself fully for the AM2; after all, it is the last step you need to complete to get your electrical qualifications. Here are some things you want to focus on to make sure that you pass your assessment:

When the time comes to take your AM2, do keep in mind that your tools are important and you will want to take steps to keep them secure. It makes good sense to buy a sturdy padlock for this purpose.

Being able to find faults in wiring will be an important part of your job once you have completed your electrical qualifications. Don't forget to use continuity and insulation tests when you feel they are necessary. These tests will provide you with valuable information you will need to pass your AM2.
